Consumer Barometer Survey

Target Population & Sampling
  • Target population: Online population who use at least one connected device and purchased at least one product from the list shown below under ‘Content’ –> ‘The Smart Shopper’. We focused on the population of 16+ in each country except:
    • 18+ in Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Vietnam, US
Sampling
  • The sample size was set at a minimum of n=3,000 in each country except:
    • India, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, UAE and Saudi Arabia, where 1,200 interviews were conducted in each country
  • Quotas were applied in the sampling process with regard to age, gender, educational level and the region as well as online activities and smartphone usage. Quotas were taken from the Connected Consumer Survey to ensure local representativity for the online population
  • Survey invitations were distributed in small batches across a number of weeks to ensure the inclusion of less frequent Internet users
Content
  • The Smart Shopper: Internet users were asked to highlight products purchased in the past 3 or 12 months, depending on the product. In online-surveyed markets, respondents were asked about one recently-purchased product; in face-to-face markets, they were asked about up to three products.
    • The product list included:
      • Past 3 months: clothing or footwear, groceries, make-up (women only), physical/digital music, hair care products, over-the-counter (OTC) medicines or vitamins, restaurant meals
      • Past 12 months: car insurance, cinema tickets, flight tickets (leisure), hotel stay (leisure), large home appliances, mobile phones or smartphones, TV sets, laptops & tablets, Do It Yourself (DIY) products, home furnishings, long-distance leisure ground travel, personal loan, real estate
    • The sample size for each product is approximately 300 interviews per country. When no product is chosen in the product filter, the website will show a straight average across all products.
  • The Local Business Shopper: Internet users were asked to discuss their search for local businesses in the prior month. Sample sizes per country differed based on a natural fall-out. The types of businesses asked about were:
    • Restaurants, bars, theatres, cinemas, events etc.
    • Hotels, parks, museums, airports etc.
    • Supermarkets, convenience stores, speciality food shops etc.
    • Plumbers, gardeners, builders, cleaners etc.
    • Taxis, car or motorcycle rentals, auto repair shops etc.
    • Gyms, Golf courses, fitness centres, yoga studios etc.
    • Pharmacies, massage therapists, doctors, hospitals etc.
  • The International Shopper: Internet users were asked to discuss purchases they have ever made online from abroad. Sample sizes per country differed based on a natural fall-out.
  • The Smart Viewer: Internet users who watch online videos were asked to describe their online video viewing habits in general and then focus on a specific online video session that had taken place within the prior seven days via a specified device. The sample size is approximately 1,500 interviews per country. In the case of China, YouTube questions were not asked and so no data is available.
Timing
  • For countries run via online panels, fieldwork ran from November 2014-February 2015
  • For countries run via face-to-face interviews, fieldwork started in January 2015 and continued through April 2015.
