Google Ads Search Terms Report is Changing. Get ready to lose more money on wrong clicks

Google has introduced a new change to its Google Ads Platform. It’s the Search Terms Data. Companies who run their google ads campaign know that when they choose a keyword let’s say marketing company in Dubai – broad match, your search terms or search query data could show ads on terms like markeing agency Dubai, advertising companies in UA, etc. While the majority of the time Google is good at showing your ads for the right search terms, with multiple variations to your original keywords, often it can show your ads on the wrong search terms too. This results in your ads getting clicked for wrong search keywords and you pay more for wrong clicks.

Google Ads Statement:

“We are updating the search terms report to only include terms that were searched by a significant number of users. As a result you may see fewer terms in your report going forward,” the notice says.

There is also no detail on what a significant number means. Until August 2020, you were able to see sometimes 90% of all the search terms, going forward advertisers will see lesser search terms data in their reports. They will not know what is getting the clicks as this data can be hidden by Google citing privacy reasons. We have already seen some of our client’s search terms report down to 20%. This means we don’t know what were those 80% of clicks we got for! It’s a more serious problem for us advertisers and companies who pay big amounts to Google run to ads. Negative Keywords Management

At our agency, we regularly check our client’s campaign and see search terms data to remove negative keywords. It’s a big way to save on wrong clicks and optimize the google ads campaigns. Also, find useful keywords to add and improve results. What happens when enough google ads search terms data is not shown? It’s a cause to worry. So we advise you to tighten your match types. What this means for your Google Ads Campaigns

Google is already planning to shift awareness from keywords to audience targeting like Facebook ads and Machine Learning. But we know it’s far from over and we can only wait and watch how google gives us advertisers control back to manage the campaigns better. For now, it seems like Google wants to hide millions of search query data due to privacy issues. We are not convinced. We request advertisers to recheck all their keywords and if any of them get more impressions and clicks, measure the results or conversions that matter to you. If the conversions come at the cost you wanted then you are on the right track 🙂
